LabelThis painting is one of three that come from a set depicting the various subjects of dreams that would be interpreted as meaningful omens or portents. There were probably originally a little over a hundred such images in the set. Their unprimed paper and roughly painted likenesses indicate that they were made for the middle-class rather than for royal use. In addition, some of the images show that this set was specifically made for Jains rather than Hindus or Muslims, although all three religions made and used such sets of dream interpretations. |
